This morning it has been announced that the Holy Father, Pope Francis, has named Mgr Mark O’Toole of Westminster, the current Rector of Allen Hall Seminary, as the ninth Bishop of Plymouth.
In announcing the appointment to the Westminster clergy, Archbishop Vincent Nichols said:
Mgr Mark has fulfilled many roles in our Diocese, best known as Rector of our Seminary, Allen Hall, and as Secretary to Cardinal Cormac for six years. He is a dedicated, gifted and experienced priest who will become an excellent Bishop of Plymouth and a valued member of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.
Cardiff has its own association with Allen Hall; we currently have 3 seminarians resident there. Our prayers and thanksgiving are given to God for both bishop-elect Mark and the people of Plymouth diocese at this time. We also remember bishop-emeritus Budd as he begins his retirement having served Plymouth for the past 27 years.
