CAFOD (The Catholic Fund for Overseas Development) has launched an emergency appeal to raise funds to aid the people of the Philippines who have been left devastated by the (super) Typhoon Haiyan that struck the country last Friday. The full extent of the devastation is still not known due to the lack of power and telephones, which have been knocked out by the storm.

In one city alone it has been estimated that 10,000 people have been killed. As we have all witnessed in the television new reports, no words can even get close to the full horror the typhoon has brought to the people. At least 80% of the population of the Philippines are Catholic, but even on a human level the suffering being experienced demands a response. Pope Francis has asked for prayers and generosity towards a nation that is in calamity.
