Cardinal Newman Comprehensive School in Rhydyfelin and one of its feeder schools St. Michael’s Primary in Treforest, have achieved a unique double in the world of education.
In November of last year Cardinal Newman was ranked top secondary school in the Rhondda Cynon Taff unitary authority (RCT) and now St. Michael’s has been ranked the top primary school in RCT and sixth overall in Wales. Both schools were named the top schools in their sector in the Media Wales schools ranking system, which uses 21 different Government approved measures including attendance, pupil attainment, behaviour, finance and staffing.
Cardinal Newman works closely with St. Michael’s and all of its cluster group in improving standards in English and Maths, a major priority set by the Welsh Government. The partnership extends to residential events for pupils in Year 6 as well as a transition week at Cardinal Newman itself. Staff from the Catholic cluster meet to discuss ways of improving standards in their communities, share inset days to enhance the professional and spiritual development of staff.
This success is testament to the hard work of the staff and students as well as the continued support of parents, Governors, the Archdiocese and RCT. We are extremely proud of everyone and what they have achieved.
