11:59 p.m., December 31st saw 50 people gathered in the Church of St Philip Evans in Llanederyn, praying their way into the New Year with adoration and Mass – they came from as far afield as the Rhondda and Llanishen to begin 2014 in the presence of the Lord. A further 40 parishioners came to the 10 a.m. Mass on New Year’s Day to start the year in the best way possible.
Another new beginning for the parish was the arrival of its new parish priest, Rev’d Gareth Leyshon, in September 2013. Rev’d Leyshon commented: “It’s been a steep learning curve for me – I have had to improve my Welsh-language pronunciation rapidly and learn to celebrate the Mass using Sign Language for the deaf community which gathers here!” The Welsh speakers and sign-users seem quite pleased with his progress so far!
St Philip Evans is the designated parish for ministry to the deaf in Cardiff. The 11 a.m. Sunday Mass is supported with sign language every weekend.
