New Auxiliary Bishop for Birmingham

This morning Pope Francis appointed Fr Robert Byrne Cong. Orat. as the new auxiliary bishop of Birmingham succeeding Bishop Philip Pargeter.  Bishop-elect Byrne was born in 1956.  He joined the Birmingham Oratory in 1980 and subsequently founded the Oxford Oratory in 1990.  More recently he has been the National Ecumenical Officer for the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.

The Bishop-elect is no stranger to the Cardiff Diocese.  He recently visited our cathedral to preach at an Ecumenical Vespers for the unity of Christians back in January.  He is pictures below with Archbishop George Stack before the start of the service.
